Abstract

Generously compensated. Care and assistance of uncles-aunts and nephews-nieces in early modern aristocratic families (Siena and Rome, seventeenth-nineteenth centuries)

Being uncles, aunts and nephews in noble italian families in the Old Regime did not only mean being a part of an enlarged family but also living together, being educated and being assisted.
In this article, by means of some letters written by aunts, uncles and nephews to other members of the family, I will show the existence and describe the shape of spaces built around generosity of non-married uncles and aunts and the impact of this generosity on the lives of nephews of some Italian noble families (Chigi, Pamphilj, Sergardi, Buonsignori e Borghese).
In the last part of the essay the effects of uncles’ and aunts’ generosity will be compared with the jurisprudence of the roman tribunal of Sacra Rota in order to understand how men and women of the 17th, 18th and 19th century considered their duty of assistance and how this obligation was influenced by gender.
