Abstract

The Average Number of Children per Marriage by Corrado Gini. Life and Times of a Honest Measure

The birth and the story of a new fertility measure, the average number of children per marriage, proposed by Corrado Gini in 1932, are hereby discussed, particularly in the form of the so-called weighted average. It was heavily criticized by Italian colleagues of that time, when another measure, the average birth order (which was actually less accurate), was primarily used. However, it was resumed by the French scholars and used to estimate the marital fertility in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Due to the current high amount of illegitimate births, the measure is not used anymore, although from the same method it is possible to make other useful applications. Conversely, it is broadly used in the field of historical demography, in which the simplicity of the method is well suited to the lack of sources. It is sufficient to have data about legitimate births and marriages during a time period to obtain, under certain conditions, useful information about fertility of past populations.
