Abstract

Ageing in the nineteenth-century Italian Cohorts

This paper presents an analysis of the ageing process experienced by the Italian cohorts born between 1792 and 1880, based on the data of the Human Mortality Database. For the age-range 80+ the rate of ageing of the Italian cohorts, a measure of the pace of mortality acceleration with age, has been estimated through the Gompertz and the gamma-Gompertz models. The estimates of the cohorts’ rates of ageing have been subsequently compared with the infant and general mortality experienced by the population in the cohorts’ birth years. The general hypothesis presented in the paper is that these indicators provide an indirect indication about the disease load suffered by mothers during their pregnancy. Through a linear regression approach, the analysis identifies the existence of a statistically significant positive association between the proxies of disease load during pregnancy and the rate of ageing of the cohorts. The analysis is also able to prove the existence of a similar relationship between the disease load indicators and the initial variability of frailty. These findings seem to suggest that important characteristics of the ageing process may be traced back to events experienced during the fetal period. However, these findingsmight also depend on a miss-specification of the initial distribution of frailty (gamma hypothesis), especially for those cohorts which were born during a mortality crisis.
