L’emigrazione minorile dalla montagna italiana nel lungo Ottocento: tipologie e caratteri evolutivi

Numerose ricerche condotte negli ultimi decenni hanno evidenziato come molte delle correnti migratorie minorili italiane otto-novecentesche, rientranti nella tipologia delle migrazioni commerciali, di mestiere e di lavoro, provenissero da zone di montagna. Scopo del presente saggio, che è un’anticipazione di una ricerca più ampia sull’emigrazione minorile italiana dell’Ottocento e degli inizi del Novecento, è di fornire un quadro generale sui flussi minorili in partenza dalle zone alpine e appenniniche dell’Italia, indicando: 1) le principali specializzazioni subregionali e interregionali (ovvero le tipologie dei mestieri che venivano svolti dai piccoli emigranti in relazione ai territori di provenienza); 2) le aspettative famigliari, le modalità di reclutamento e i tempi migratori; 3) le componenti socio-economiche e demografiche alla base di queste specifiche correnti migratorie.

Mountain minors’ migrations in Italy during the ‘long’ eighteenth century: tipologies and developing characteristics

In the last years many studies of social history have pointed out the mountain origins of numerous Italian migration flows composed by children and teenagers. This paper represents a section of a research on Italian minors’ migrations during 19th century; it deals with the characteristics of the mountain minors’ flows and focuses on: 1) the different activities practised by the children abroad in relation to the origin areas (the little street musicians came from the Ligurian and Parmense Apennines and from the provinces of Caserta and Potenza; the statuette vendors came from the Lucchesia; the young glass-makers and their buyers came from the Liri and Comino valleys, etc. etc); 2) the family motivations, the recruitment systems; the duration of migratory experience; 3) the social, economic and demographic reasons which influenced this phenomenon respectively in the Alps and in the Apennines zones.
