Nascere in ghetto. Ebrei e natalità ad Ancona nel XVIII secolo

L’articolo ricostruisce i principali aspetti della demografia degli ebrei di Ancona nel XVIII secolo, più precisamente tra la fine del Seicento e l’inizio dell’Ottocento. Nella prima parte vengono vagliati i dati finora disponibili a partire da alcune fonti note, per lo più Stati delle anime e censimenti pontifici, e da altre utilizzate qui per la prima volta in maniera sistematica, come i registri di nascita e morte della Comunità ebraica. In secondo luogo, alla luce di recenti proposte interpretative, vengono avanzate alcune ipotesi, anche in chiava comparativa a partire dal caso di Ancona, sul tema classico degli ebrei come precursori di alcuni comportamenti della transizione demografica.

Born in ghetto. Jews and birth rate in Ancona during the 18th century

This paper focuses on the main aspects of the demography of the jewish population of Ancona in the 18th century, or more precisely from the late 17th to the early 19th century. The first part of the paper analyzes the available data, starting from known sources like «Stati delle anime» and papal census records, as well as sources used here for the first time in a systematic way, such as birth and death registers of the whole Jewish Community. Secondly, in the light of recent interpretations, the work, placing the case of Ancona in a comparative perspective, advances some hypotheses on the classic theme of the Jews as precursors of some typical behaviors of the demographic transition.
