Una ricca fonte demografica per il XIX secolo: i Registri Civili di Matrimonio nell’Italia asburgica

Le ricerche demografiche necessitano da sempre di fonti storiche accurate e ricche di informazioni. Per studiare le dinamiche demografiche molti studi in passato hanno fatto uso dei Registri Religiosi dei battesimi, dei matrimoni e delle sepolture in quanto fonti ampiamente diffuse e presenti in gran parte degli archivi parrocchiali. Nel XIX secolo, con l’amministrazione francese e successivamente con quella austriaca, lo Stato entra nella sfera delle registrazioni degli eventi principali della vita dei cittadini (nascita, matrimonio e morte), comportando la produzione di nuovi documenti, di tipo civile, spesso ignorati dagli studiosi. In questo articolo si vuole esaminare le informazioni presenti nei Registri Civili dei Matrimoni compilati nei Länder dell’Impero austriaco, che, per ricchezza e facilità di lettura, costituiscono una preziosa fonte per nuovi approfondimenti sui temi della nuzialità, nonché sull’alfabetizzazione, la struttura socioprofessionale e la mobilità territoriale delle comunità parrocchiali soggette alla dominazione asburgica del XIX secolo.

A rich demographic source for the 19th century: the Civil Marriage Registers in Habsburg Italy

Demographic research has always needed accurate and information-rich historical sources. To study demographic dynamics many studies in the past have made use of Religious Registers of baptisms, marriages and burials as widely available sources found in most parish archives. In the 19th century, with the French and later the Austrian administration, the state entered the sphere of records of the main events in the life of citizens (birth, marriage, and death), leading in the production of new documents, of a civil type, often ignored by scholars. The aim of this article is to examine the information found in the Civil Registries of Marriages compiled in the landers of the Austrian Empire, which, due to their richness and ease of reading, constitute a valuable source for new insights into the issues of nuptiality, as well as literacy, socio-professional structure and territorial mobility of the parish communities subject to the Habsburg Dominion in the 19th century.
