Migranti stranieri nel Granducato di Toscana, 1818-1837

Questo studio analizza i flussi migratori degli stranieri nel Granducato di Toscana tra il 1818 e il 1837, utilizzando come fonte principale il Registro dei morti degli individui non toscani, compilato dall’Ufficio dello Stato civile. Attraverso l’analisi dei decessi di stranieri, sia provenienti da Stati preunitari italiani sia da Stati esteri, si ricostruiscono le dinamiche migratorie, evidenziando la prevalenza di uomini adulti tra i migranti e la stagionalità dei movimenti. Il lavoro mostra come le migrazioni temporanee fossero frequenti, specialmente tra le comunità confinanti con il Granducato, e come la Maremma, grazie ai lavori di bonifica, fosse un’importante area di attrazione. L’analisi si arricchisce con dati su età, sesso, mestiere e provenienza dei defunti, offrendo un quadro dettagliato delle caratteristiche demografiche dei migranti stranieri nel contesto toscano dell’epoca.

Foreign Migrants in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, 1818-1837

This study examines the migration flows of foreigners in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany between 1818 and 1837, using the Register of deaths of non-tuscan individuals compiled by the Tuscan Civil registry office as the primary source. By analyzing the deaths of foreigners, both from pre-unification Italian states and from foreign countries, the research reconstructs migration dynamics, highlighting the predominance of adult males among migrants and the seasonality of their movements. The study reveals that temporary migrations were common, especially from communities bordering the Grand Duchy, and that the Maremma region, due to land reclamation projects, was a significant area of attraction. The analysis is enriched with data on the age, gender, occupation, and origin of the deceased, providing a detailed demographic profile of foreign migrants in Tuscany during this period.
