Abstract

Landed property structure of the Tuscan Grand Duchy at the end of the ancien régime

This essay provides, for the first time in its genre, a global framework of landed property structure of the Tuscan grand duchy during the first half of the 19th century. This work has been made possible thanks to the land owner’s list that constitutes the most important source from which both characteristics and potential capacity are shown. As far as the latter is concerned, its testing has been carried out by means of some in depth investigations which particularly refer to royal administrations, ecclesiastic and charity bodies together with the landed property élite.
The first point regards a first articulation of various religious institutions built on the relation between land income and rank (benefits, parish churches, bishop’s revenues, etc.) and also regards hospitals and convents, being the second highly diminished in comparison with the first half of the 18th century. This constitutes evidence of the land conveyance process which took place in the Leopold and French periods.
The essay also focuses on great private land owners and their supremacy whose force directly derives from ancient patriciates of republican origins and confirming the medieval roots in the regional land property structure. At the same time the essay points out social mobility processes especially in the first part of the 19th century, when Tuscany as well prepares itself to enter the ‘bourgeoisie century’.
