Abstract

Population of the Mt. Amiata mining area

The history of the population living in the various villages found along the eastern slope of Mt. Amiata is closely bound up with the local cinnabar mine. Evidence attests to activity as far back as Etruscan times, and the mine became particularly important towards the second half of the XIX century, in the full throes of the industrial revolution. The first Amiata mining company was founded in 1846 and was active until it was closed down in 1976, ushering in a new phase when the difficult process of reconversion was begun.
In this paper we analyse the impact of historical trends in mining activities on the socio-demographic status of the population in four municipalities located on Mt. Amiata. These are Abbadia San Salvatore, Castell’Azzara, Piancastagnaio and Santa Fiora. The first section provides a history of the mines and miners in the Amiata area and the second looks at how the population evolved from the end of the XIX century up until the present day in terms of demographic developments and how these were shaped by social and economic changes. The last section analyses male and female mortality since the late 1970’s, taking into account the cause of death.
