Abstract

Building up a Family. Abandoned Children and their Adoptive Parents in Wallachia (1800-1860)

This study examines the possibilities the abandoned children had in creating a family of their own in the first half of nineteenth century Wallachia. The State was responsible for their wellbeing, creating not only a special institution for them (Paupers’ Institute) but also a legislation with respect to every issue regarding their lives, in this way introducing all the required premises to provide a suitable family. Starting from this, our main interest is to establish in what measure the State’s demands overlapped or were different from the interests the individuals/couples had when they applied for adoption. This inquiry over archival documents shows us three categories of what we might call «alternative» parents: 1) those who adopted late in their life and wanted to have an heir to their fortune and name; 2) careers (especially wet-nurses) who became attached to children and wanted to officially include them in their families and 3) those who looked for economic advantages. According to this and the way the child was treated after the adoption, we can evaluate the State’s intervention. The life of abandoned children after they became a part of a family was important, but the State still did not forget that another important issue was to create a social equilibrium within the society and to avoid delinquency.
