Nel 1790 Giammaria Ortes pubblicò le Riflessioni sulla popolazione in rapporto all’economia nazionale, i cui primi quattro capitoli sono riprodotti nell’appendice di questo articolo. In questi scritti, Ortes anticipò gli elementi tipici della teoria malthusiana come la progressione geometrica della popolazione, i freni alla crescita demografica dovuti alle risorse disponibili. I capitoli in questione hanno fatto conoscere Ortes come il ‘precursore di Malthus’. Ma oltre alle somiglianze, il presente articolo illustra anche le notevoli differenze tra i due autori.

Ortes precursor of Malthus, or Malthus epigone of Ortes?

In 1790 Giammaria Ortes published the Reflections on the population in relation to the national economy, whose first four chapters are reproduced in the appendix of this article. In this text, Ortes anticipated the typical elements of the Malthusian theory such as the geometric progression of the population, the limits to the population growth due to the available resources. The chapters in question have made Ortes known as the ‘precursor of Malthus’. But besides the similarities, this article also illustrates the remarkable differences between the two authors.
