Abstract

A prestigeous or an impossible market? The distribution of Milanese Scala boxes (1778-1930)

The Milanese Scala boxes, between the year of the theatre reconstruction (1778) and its municipalization started in 1928 belonged to private owners. They can be really thought as real estates immovable, little civic buildings of great value. The regular publication of very detailed “Owners Lists” allows the reconstruction of the boxes property distribution and its evolution over time. This is of great interest because the boxes were considered at the time as high prestige goods. The author shows that in 1815 two thirds of the boxes belonged to the Milanese aristocracy while in 1917 the boxes belonging to this élite were less than a half of the total.
The patrician exclusive control seems to be about to collapse while progressive middle-class interference becomes evident. One can observe more dynamic market stages, for instance between 1847 and 1862, when the middle class insertion is more relevant and more static market stages under the aristocracy control.
The aristocrats kept on buying the Scala boxes and dealing on a market which was peculiar to the city élite of the time.
